The door (1) of a motor vehicle is hinged to the door frame pillar (3) by a hinge consisting of links (5,6,10,11) which form a parallelogram linkage. The movement of the individual links relative to the pillar (3) is controlled by locking devices (15a, 15b). These devices cause the links (10, 11) to move in a defined sequence so that the door (1) moves initially at right angles to the side of the vehicle before swinging to the open position about the linkage pivot (13).
