PURPOSE: To smoothly change a cloth beam by detecting load power from the amount of deflection of an elastic transmission element installed in a movable transmission of a cloth beam changer to output control signals and by accurately controlling the positions of both a gripping tool and the beam. CONSTITUTION: The purpose of this invention is achieved by placing springs 11, 12 on movable transmission 3, 9 between a gripping tool 4 and a supporting tool 10 and constituting an elastic transmission link bending in response to a load equal to or larger than a predetermined value with springs 11, 12. When making a spindle nut 22 descend by making a vertically conveying slide 9 supporting a gripping arm 3 descend, the spring 11 is compressed so as to bend the arm 3 and so as for the spring 12 to be compressed due to a preload, and sensors 23, 24 detect for the amount of deflection of the spring 12 the value of force generated and output it as control signals for accurately positioning the gripping tool 4 and a full beam 17 to be changed or an empty beam 16 in the winding-on station 26 of the loom.
