The solid state imaging appts. comprises an image pickup section including an interline transfer CCD and a colour filter arrangement with a period of two picture elements in horizontal and vertical directons. The image pickup section generates charges in accordance with incident light. A storage section includes two CCDs. A switch arrangement selectively transfers the charges from the image pickup section to either of the CCDs in the storage section. A readout section includes at least one CCD and reads out the charges from the storage section. During a vertical blanking period, picture elements corresp. to odd lines are output from the image pickup sectiona and are transferred to one CCD.
