A method of removing liquids specifically lighter than water, such as, for example, mineral oil, benzene, petroleum, benzol, is distinguished by the fact that a funnel-shaped hood open at the bottom is put into the water contaminated with the liquid, and the hood is then plunged so deep into the water that the water level inside the hood is at the top cover area of the hood so that the liquid quantity at the top cover area can then be drawn off from the hood. An apparatus especially suitable for this method is characterised by at least one funnel-shaped hood which is open at the bottom and has an inner space tapering conically upwards and an opening in its topmost cover area. A line for drawing off the liquid collected in the topmost cover area can then be attached to the opening.
