Bundles of logs are transported by a carriage (2) which runs on an overhead cable (1). The bundle (13) is attached to the carriage by a cable (6) which passes around the bundle and the free end (12) of the cable is attached to the upper part of the cable by a loop (11) which engages a hook (7). This hook (7) has an eye which enables it to slide over the upper part of the cable (6). The hook (7) is attached to the release cable (15) which is wound onto a spring loaded drum (16). When the bundle (13) is lowered to the ground the force applied by the spring of the drum (16) pulls the hook (7) upwards along the upper part of the load cable (6) so that the hook (7) is disengaged from the loop (11) and the bundle (13) is released.
