PURPOSE: To obtain a continuous carbon fiber having high modulus and low electric resistivity by melt-spinning mesophase pitch having a high melting paint to form continuous pitch-based fibers, subsequently treating the fibers with a nitric acid aqueous solution to make them infusible, and heat-treating the infusible fibers at high temperature in an inert gas atmosphere to carbonize them. CONSTITUTION: Mesophase pitch having a softening point of higher than 345 deg.C is melt-spun at a temperature higher than 395 deg.C to from: plural continuous pitch-based fibers. The pitch-based fibers are treated with a nitric acid aqueous solution to make them infusible and subsequently the infusible fibers are heat treated at a final temperature higher than 3000 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere to carbonize them. Thus, the objective fiber having tensile modulus higher than 8.79×10 Kg/cm<2> (125×106 psi), an electrical resistivity lower than 1.6 micro-ohm-meter and a density higher than 2.18 g/cc is obtained.
