Welding unit with X-shaped welding pincer arrangement with two welding electrode arms (8,9) rigidly mounted at their rear ends on a swivel lever (10,11), has a force-equalisation unit (21) to compensate for the force extered by the electrodes on the workpiece (14). The compensator is positioned to act between the swivel levers (10,11) and a rigid support (20) on the robot head (1). The compensator has a pressure medium operated unit (22) with a piston (25) and cylinder (24) linked to a pressure regulator (23) which is programmed to the positions of the welding pincers (4) as defined by the welding programme. The necessary com-pensating counterforce is effected shortly before the electrode (6) is applied to the workpiece. ADVANTAGE - Compensation for the weight of the welding unit on the workpiece is assured for all possible positions of the welding pincer arrangement.
