The capacitor has a core sleeve (9) carrying at least one capacitor winding (4), a metallic contact element (3,12) at its opposing ends, coupled to a layer (11) applied to the wound ends of the capacitor winding (4). Each contact element (3,12) is central in the core sleeve (9) and projects through an outer plastics sheathing (6) around the outside of the wound capacitor. The outer plastics sheathing (6) may incorporate reinforcing fibres, with an O ring seal (2) between the sheathing (6) and the outside of each contact element (3,12).
