<p>At each instant of rank i in a set of n instants distributed over one flight period, the following quantities are measured: the modulus Vi of the speed of the aircraft relative to the air, and the three components SNi, SEi and SVi of the ground speed of the aircraft. The method of least squares is then used to solve the system of n(n-1)/2 equations in three unknowns WN, WE and WV: 2(SNi - SNj)WN + 2(SEi - SEj)WE + 2(SVi - SVj)WV = S<2>Ni - S<2>Nj + S<2>Ei - S<2>Ej + S<2>Vi - S<2>Vj + V<2>j - V<2>i in which WN, WE and WV are the three components of the mean speed of the wind during the flight period. Any units in the aircraft which are sensitive to the wind, for example the weapon systems are controlled in response to the components determined in this way.
