Installation of piston rings

A piston ring R (Fig. 7(d)) is installed in a groove GL of a piston P by pushing the piston ring R off the end of a guide member 5. The piston ring R is mounted on the outside of the guide member 6, which has a diameter larger than the outside diameter of the piston P. The pushing is carried out while maintaining a clearance which allows for the piston ring R to deflect from the planar configuration. This clearance is formed between the end of the guide member 6 and a plane including the groove surface which lies further from the end of the guide member 6. This process may be performed in operation of apparatus for installing a compound oil ring S, R in a piston ring groove G of the piston P. The apparatus includes the guide member 6 and a displacing device 42 for pushing, in sequence, a spacer ring S and a pair of said rail rings R off the guide member 6. The apparatus also comprises a restricting member 43 which is movable back and forth in a radial direction of the guide member 6 and which can be positioned to provide a clearance opening into that groove portion GU which is formed between that groove surface of the piston ring groove G which is closer to the guide member 6 and the spacer ring S installed in the piston ring groove G.
