PURPOSE:To make the ability of a shutter excellent even in the case of high time-division driving and to accomplish high-contrast display by combining liquid crystal cells constituted by sandwiching twisted and oriented nematic liquid crystal with a liquid crystal display element where an optical compensating plate is inserted. CONSTITUTION:The nematic liquid crystal sealed in the liquid crystal cell 1 for optical compensation and the liquid crystal cell 2 for display is twisted by 180 deg. respectively. The twist directions of the liquid crystal cells 1 and 2 are opposite to each other. Then, the anisotropy of the double refraction of the nematic liquid crystal which is used for both cells is 0.12. Furthermore, the orientation of the nematic liquid crystal in contact with the upper glass substrate of the liquid crystal cell 1 makes the angle of 45 deg. with the direction of the absorption axis of an upper polarizing plate 3. And the orientation of the nematic liquid crystal in contact with the lower glass substrate of the liquid crystal cell 2 makes the angle of 45 deg. with the direction of the absorption axis of a lower polarizing plate 4. Then, the absorption axes of both polarizing plates are orthogonally crossed with each other. |
