PURPOSE:To perform such half-tone picture reduction processing that drop-out of segments in the background is reduced by allowing original picture elements and converted picture elements to correspond to each other and determining the density of a converted picture element in accordance with densities of nearby original picture elements based on the projection method. CONSTITUTION:When a center R1 of a converted picture element exists in an area #1 viewed from a point A and a center R2 of a converted picture element adjacent in the horizontal direction exists in an area #4 viewed from a point D, the original picture element having the center D and that having a center C are omitted. Consequently, when it is checked whether picture elements to be omitted bear a high frequency component viewed in the horizontal direction (namely, the high frequency component due to a segment in the vertical direction existing in the background) or not at the time of existence of the converted picture element having the center R1, it is sufficient if densities of original picture elements marked with black circles are noticed. |
