Prepn. of 2-mercapto-4,6-fluoroalkoxy pyrimidines of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting a 2-mercapto-4-halo-6-hydroxy pyrimidine of formula (II) with chlorodifluoromethane (CDFM) or a 1,1difluoroalkene of formula (III) in an inert solvent and in the presence of a strong base to give a 2-mercapto-4-halo-6fluoroalkoxypyrimidine of formula (IV); (b) reacting (IV) with an alkaline (earth) metal nitrite in a polar solvent to form a 2mercapto-4-hydroxy-6-fluoroalkoxypyrimidine of formula (V), (c) reacting (v) with CDFM or (III) in an inert solvent in the presence of a strong base to form (I). In (I), R1= C1-4 alkyl, phenyl or benzyl; T1 and T2 each= H or CHX1X2; X1 and X2 each = CF3, F, Cl or Br; Y= Cl or Br.
