Two pipes (11,12) are connected end to end by a sleeve (29) of elastomeric material which is held in place by a metal housing (13). The latter has a flange (14,15) formed along each edge, and has looped ends which are joined together by two bolts (27,28). A conical ring (38,39) abuts against each end of the sleeve (29). The outer edge of each ring abuts against the edge flange. The inner edge of each ring has integrally formed claws. As the housing is tightened, the claws dig into the external surface of the pipe and resist the axial force due to the internal pipe pressure.
