The elongate body 1 of this spanner (key) includes an operating end 3 assuming the overall shape of a semicylindrical gutter provided at the end of a transverse partition 5 having a polygonal cut out 6 constituting a drive jaw capable of being fitted onto the square drive 7 for operating a tap (valve) 8 of a gas bottle. Now, the internal diameter of this operating end 3 of the spanner (key) is greater than the diameter of the hand wheel 9 of such a tap (valve) and this end is nevertheless capable of being engaged in the gap lying between a tap (valve) 8 and the protection sleeve (10) surrounding it. Preferably, the present spanner (key) furthermore includes a grasping member 11 in the form of a cap capable of fitting, and being fixed by wedging, onto the operating hand wheel 9 of a gas bottle tap (valve) 8, so as to "hold" the latter after it has been unscrewed.
