<p>In the system log (1) is stored an unstructured, sequential file of posts, each with a field in which their corresp. category is stated. When a report is required at a user terminal (2), the category must be selected together with specific selection criteria for the report, i.e. a command is printed at the terminal ordering a report covering e.g. the operation time of the CPU during the month of March in 1989. The command activates processes in the system for each post in the log file. Firstly, a check (3) is made as to whether each post category matches that selected for the report. Where categories are found to match, the corresp. post is converted (4) to a format used by a data base control unit. Once converted, a check is made as to whether it fulfils the selection criteria or not. If it doe snot, the post is discarded. and the next converted post is checked. Where the selection criteria are fulfilled, the converted post is stored in a temeporay data base (5). When this stage has been completed for all posts in the file, the processor is activated to read out all the converted posts from the temporary data base and format them (6) to a selected report format. @(Provisional basic advised week 9046)@.</p> |
