<p>The display has two liquid cell layers, each of which has a ferroelectric liquid crystal material sandwiched between a pair of facing substrate plates. One of the liquid cell layers acts as a display driver display cell, the other acting as a compensation liquid crystal cell, both being supplied with rectangular AC voltage signals. Pref. the phase offset between the 2 rectangular AC voltage signals is variable, to allow intermediate tones to be displayed.</p>
