A method and an apparatus for workpiece treatment, in particular for welding, by means of a laser beam (12) is to be designed in such a way that the laser source (13) can be operated with constant, optimally proportioned output and yet the thermal energy requirement fluctuating locally along the treatment path (s) is fed into the workpiece (11) without having to realise feed paths of different depth for this. Depending on the thermal requirements, the solution provides for different relative velocities between laser beam (12) and workpiece (11), preferably following and opposing movements (vm, vg), alternating in step-back oscillating sequence, of the laser beam (12) with regard to the workpiece movement (vw) in accordance with periodically recurrent, thermal requirement zones along the treatment path (s) at the workpiece (11). <IMAGE>
