In known filters for purifying gases in which the filter medium comprises a bulk material layer, in particular a high-temperature-resistant bulk material layer, the filter is divided into a plurality of chambers containing a bulk material layer, which chambers are connected to lines for untreated gas feed and clean gas discharge, the feed of the filter medium into the filter chambers being carried out via feed lines above the bulk material layer and the discharge of the dust-laden filter medium being carried out via discharge lines beneath the bulk material layer. According to the invention, a very considerable structural improvement, in particular with respect to optimal matching of capacity to the particular requirements, is achieved by the chambers (2) furnished with bulk material (3) being arranged in series adjacent to each other, and by each chamber (2) being furnished with its own discharge line (8) for discharge of the dust-laden filter medium. <IMAGE>
