A unilaterally pinched discharge lamp (1) with increased high voltage resistance in which the outer current leads (4) projecting from the pinch base (7) are bent back in different directions immediately at the pinch end in the pinch plane at an angle until they are at right-angles to the lamp axis. The leads (4) have an insulating member (5) at least over the width of the pinch base (7), which member is adhered or welded to the pinch. Member (5) is a glass rod or plastics material and may extend beyond the pinch base (7). <IMAGE>
