A sewing machine, which, in the event of a fault on the shuttle thread, makes it possible to produce a seam continuous on the seam top side, is to be designed in such a way that an uninterrupted thread run is also obtained on the seam underside. There is provided a control element which is connected via a first group of outputs to an actuator of the transport device and via a second group of outputs to the positioning motor of the sewing machine and of which the input signal generated as a result of the thread fault causes control commands to be issued to the actuator and positioning motor, in order to stop the needle bar preferably in its lower reversal position, to switch on the transport device for movement of the material to be sewn into the location corresponding to the last properly executed knotting, to stop the needle bar in its upper reversal position during the elimination of the fault, and thereafter to switch on its drive for at least one stitch-forming cycle, with the transport device put out of operation. The transport device is subsequently activated for a movement in the original direction. <IMAGE>
