A surface contact thermometer for the transcutaneous measurement of body temperature. The thermometer comprises a temperature sensor which is backed by a layer of thermally insulating material. The thermometer is used by placing the sensor against the skin so that the sensor is sandwiched between the thermal insulating layer and the skin. The sensor temperature thus rises to that of the deep body tissues. A number of embodiments are described using electronic temperature sensors, expansive temperature sensors and chemical temperature sensors. An example of the latter, based on the use of thermochromic fluid crystals which produce colour change when heated, is shown. Here, the display comprises a number of boxes (13, 14) which display temperature by colour. Boxes (15, 16) give a warning of body temperature being outside the normal range. Such a thermometer is very much easier to use than a conventional mercury thermometer. |
