The heavy-duty universal milling head with free-movement compensation is for a numerically-controlled milling machine producing spur gears and worm wheels. It is mounted with a main driving motor on a slide movable on the machine stand parallel to the axis of the work, and having a pivoting portion with a tangental slide. Above the axis of rotation (5) of the head (2) a protruding prismatic guide beam (6) is mounted on the pivoting portion (3), having a compact guide (33) prestressed in the axial and radial directions. Below the axis a prestressed supporting and damping guide (12) is offset rearwards. The intersection point (9) between the guide faces at right angles from with the centre (13) of the guide (12) a connecting path (14) inclined (15) to the axis of rotation.
