The appts. provided with a number of tool retainers (9) on a turret (3) and adapted to replace a tool (7) on a main shaft head (1) with a selected tool on the turret with a tool indexing rotational force transmitted to the turret in a tool changing position. The appts. includes a crank (6) holding the turret in a suspended state, a lever (4) adapted to be swung by an operation of a cam (8) on a vertically movable main shaft (22) and having a tension spring (17) for urging the crank to a standby position, a rod (10) having a load limiter spring (18) and connecting the crank (6) and lever together, a lever movement stopper (24) adapted to retain the lever in a predetermined position, and a crank movement stopper (23) adapted to stop a forward movement of the crank toward the tool changing position in a predetermined position.
