An optical receiver is arranged to convert input pulses of optical energy, transmitted at a predetermined pulse rate, into electrical signals. A light-sensitive element (41), such as an avalanche PIN photodiode, produces an output which is integrated, over each pulse period, by an integrator (43). Each integrated output pulse is amplified and, at the end of each pulse period, a re-setting pulse 48-47 effects a current dump to re-set the integrator (43). The integrator (43) is followed by a low-pass filter (45) providing a matched termination. In this way, the optical receiver has a substantially enhanced noise characteristic, while being operable at very high speeds. <IMAGE> |
