A CAD system input unit has a display with a screen mounted on a digitising tablet and a position indicator for controlling a cursor (14) on the tablet. A screen image results from the position indicator entering a position signal to a control unit. A right angled reference line (64) is generated on the screen using an independent auxiliary position indicator. The reference line can be displaced and rotated according to the output of a further position indicator. USE/ADVANTAGE - CAD system input unit is designed for simplified operation by showing reference line on tablet.
