PURPOSE:To obtain a nickel-hydrogen battery which can reserve effective discharge and easily control the amount of the discharge capacity by adding a metal powder to a nickel hydroxide powder. CONSTITUTION:A nickel electrode active mass is prepared by adding >=1 of powders selected from compounds of divalent cobalt and a powder of a metal which can form a stable oxide or hydroxide in a potential range where the active mass-bearing nickel electrode is used in an aqueous alkali solution as a cathode of an alkali secondary battery to a nickel hydroxide powder. since the added metal powder is nothing to do with discharge reaction. The electric amount equivalent to the amount consumed for oxidation reaction of the metal powder in an initial charging process can be reserved as discharge capacity. As a result, a large amount of discharge reserve can freely be reserved by controlling the amount of added divalent cobalt compound and a metal powder. By this way, an active mass for a nickel electrode which can reserve effective discharge reserve and a nickel-hydrogen battery using the active mass are obtained. |
