PURPOSE: To attain accurate measurement by connecting a measuring device to the tip ends of a calipers arm and first and second probes so as to measure the difference between the positions of tip ends of the first and second probes and to generate the output relating to the diameter of an object to be machined. CONSTITUTION: A gauge block 22 has a semispherical groove 34, which contains a pair of calipers arms 36 and 38. The arm 36 has a probe tip end part 40 which is directly in contact with a journal 12 of an object to be machined. In similar, the arm 38 contains a probe tip end part 42, which is engaged with the journal 12 at such a point where the contact point of the tip end part 42 is opposite to the diameter direction. A measuring device is used to measure the difference between the positions of the arms 36 and 38 and to measure the diameter thereby. An air jet gauge component is used to the measuring device, so that the diametric accuracy of within 2.5μm can be obtained.
