The method is claimed for improving the core loss properties of grain orientated silicon steel by scribing across the steel width transverse to the rolling direction. The scribe lines are imprinted by rolling the steel between rollers, one of which is of steel with triangular projections spaced 2-10 mm apart, to scribe to a depth of 6x10 power -3 mm, the other of a material having shear modulus of elasticity of less than 500 psi for example rubber. The method is useful in processing silicon steel for use in the manufacture of power transformers generators and similar equipment.
