PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as hardener and hardening accelerator for polyepoxy resin in high yield by benzylating 1-position unsubstituted imidazole compound. CONSTITUTION:1-position unsubstituted imidazole compound expressed by formula I (R2 is methyl, ethyl, isopropyl or phenyl; R4 is H or methyl) is reacted with tribenzyl-borate in the presence of carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid anhydride, or benzyl ester or lower alkyl ester of said compounds at 200-300 deg.C, then neutralized with alkali to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula II. 0.33-0.5mol tribenzyl-borate and 0.01-1.0mol carboxylic acids are used to 1mol imidazole compound expressed by formula I. |
