SURFACE PREPARATION FOR ALUMINIUM Solutions of hydrogen peroxide in sulphuric acid are used to treat aluminium metal, to form an artificially applied oxide layer having a profiled surface with protrusions which is very suitable for adhesive bonding or the application of organic coatings. A copper salt may be used as an accelerator, alone or with an amine. Treatment may be effected at temperatures up to 90.degree.C. An inorganic coating may be applied to overlie and protect the profiled oxide layer. An advantage is the possibility of using aluminium metal without a prior cleaning step.
