Process for the biological elimination of diethanolamine from diethanolamine-containing waste waters by means of a biocoenosis of microorganisms. According to the invention, the biocoenosis used is microorganisms of the genera pseudomonas and bacillus which are obtained by culturing activated sludge on nutrient media comprising diethanolamine, phosphorus sources and trace elements, with the biocoenosis being transferred in each case to the next nutrient medium comprising diethanolamine in an increasing concentration from 500 to 3000 mg/dm3. By this means, even waste water having a high diethanolamine concentration can be purified with a high degree of purity.
