The device comprises a plate (1) for securing under the shoe sole; holding means (7, 23) provided on the pedal for cooperating with the plate and maintaining the shoe relative to the pedal and means for releasing said shoe (11) from the plate controlled by the reversed rotation of the pedal. The release means (11) are arranged so that they are inactive during an ordinary reversed rotation, and the device comprises first means (7) sensitive to the traction of the foot and the plate on the pedal, and second means (19) sensitive to the amplitude of the reversed rotation, the first and second sensitive means (7, 19) being combined so as to activate the release means (11) only when a sufficient traction on the pedal and a reversed rotation of an amplitude above a set threshold is attained, such that, in the event of a fall forward, the operation of the release means is ensured, whereas said release means remain inactive during normal pedalling traction, or during reversed relaxed pedalling without traction.
