<p>PURPOSE: To raise the level of via-laser shielding patient protection during a surgical operation, with a fluid-saturated surgical-use sponge sheet of hydroxyl polyvinyl acetal foam applied to the part of a patient subject to the exposure of laser radiation. CONSTITUTION: The MEROCELL(R) cellular material is a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde and is referred to as a hydroxyl polyvinyl acetal foam. Laser shield 38a comprising sponge layer 40 of the MEROCELL(R) cellular material, placed on part 42 of a patient during a laser-applied surgical operation includes adhesive laser 44 serving to adhere the laser shield in position and withstands 5 watts of carbon dioxide laser energy at the maximum over a period up to 3 seconds in case of being soaked with a saline solution or water. Sponge layer 40 is prepared as thick as possible. As the thickness grows, the resistance against laser radiation goes up.</p> |
