This method consists in positioning the vehicle B in the receiving area A and, before lifting the vehicle B, in detecting, by means of sensor jaws 60a-60b, the spacing between the front and rear wheels 4, and in using contacts 70 arranged on these jaws to effect the closure of complementary gripping jaws. In the device, a transfer and lifting carriage F is equipped with gripping means consisting, for each wheel, of two jaws 60, of which at least the inner ones arranged between the wheels 4 are provided with sensor contacts 70 capable of acting on motor means 37 controlling the displacement of the jaws 60b in the direction of the rear wheels 4 in order to interrupt this displacement and trigger the closure of the outer jaws complementing the inner sensor jaws. These various jaws are held by upper frames 33 which can be lifted relative to at least one lower frame and are connected to means 37 capable of displacing them with respect to one another in the sensing phase independently of the motor means for displacement of the carriage F. <IMAGE>
