There is practiced a method of making low carbon silicon steel (32) in which the lining of the ladle (20) is made of dolomite instead of fireclay or alumina, and there is added to the ladle (20), before the metal is teemed into it, a pre-melted or prefused mixture containing appropriate portions of calcium silicate (12) lime magnesia (14), and spar (16), and argon (24) bubbling is practiced as before but preferably for a slightly longer period of time, and the ladle (20) is provided during argon (24) bubbling with a hood or lid (30). There is then obtained a product steel (32) with desirably low contents of oxygen (8) and nitrogen, and without penalty in the form of higher contents of aluminium and titanium in the finished steel (32).
|
