A differential unit with unequal torque distribution comprises a differential carrier (7) containing two output gears (1,2) of different diameter from one another, and planetary differential gears (3,4) supported in recesses in the carrier for rotation about axes parallel to the axis of the output gears, differential rotation of the output gears being inhibited by friction between the differential gears and their recesses in the carrier. The differential gears (3) may be of different diameter from the differential gears (4), and all the differential gears may have full circle engagement about the output gears. The differential gears are preferably in intermeshing pairs which may be in full circle engagement about the axis of the differential unit.
