<p>A process for the production of Si, Ti, Zr or U comprises (a) reacting Si-, Ti-, Zr- or U-tetrafluoride or UFG with elemental Na to obtain a mixt. of Si, Ti, Zr or U and Na fluoride, (b) reacting the mixt. with an aq. alkaline earth metal chloride soln. to fomr a slurry of insol. alkaline earth metal fluoride and Si, Ti, Zr or U in a NaCl soln,; (c) sepg. the Si, Ti, Zr or U from the slurry; (d) sepg. the alkaline earth metal fluoride from the slurry; and (e) electrolytically reducing the NaCl to pure Na metal. The process is a closed loop process in which Na metal is regenerated and recycled, to avoid the need for purificn. of Na obtd. from an external source.</p> |
