PURPOSE:To obtain p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol at high selective rate by reaction between phenol and formaldehyde under a basic condition using a crown ether in the presence of an alcohol solvent. CONSTITUTION:Using as reaction solvent, a single alcohol, mixed alcohol made up of two or more kinds of alcohol, or a mixture of alcohol and non-alcohol solvents, a crown ether (e.g. 18-crown ether-6) is added to the reaction solvent, and phenol and formaldehyde are made to react under a basic condition, thus obtaining the objective p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. In particular, solidification of said crown ether as additive using a resin will produce the objective compound in high selectivity from inexpensive raw materials alone. The present compound is useful as a raw material for synthesizing medicines, pesticides and p-hydroxybenzaldehydes, a resin modifier, etc. |
