This invention relates to a novel process and apparatus useful in determining the approximate bulk density of a wood specimen. The ability to predict or determine the approximate bulk density of a wood specimen enables field crews to select, through approximate bulk density determinations the wood quality of trees for selective consumption or breeding purposes. A wood specimen having an axial extent and a known initial volume is rendered incompressible by the application of a compressive force sufficient to expel substantially all of the free water therefrom. The approximate bulk density is then determined by dividing the compressed volume of the specimen by its initial volume and if considered appropriate, multiplying this by a constant. The apparatus is a device employed for applying the compressive force to the specimen whilst permitting the free water to be expelled therefrom whereupon the compressed or final volume of the specimen can be determined.
|
