During a procedure for the production of flat items such as nap-lined mats with a rubber backing on a vulcanising press (P) with a stationary vulcanising heating plate (8), the items (1) to be vulcanised are conveyed into place, in and out of the press (P), with the help of a heat conducting conveyor belt (9). Via the fact that each of the vulcanised items (1), shortly before they are conveyed from the conveyor belt (9) into the press (P), are subject to a heating process at a heating station (PH) for the heating of the items (1) to a temperature which lies between 4-90 degrees C, preferably 20 degrees C, below that of the vulcanising temperature used in the press (P), and that the conveyor belt (9) on the transportation of each item, is projected in a direction away from the pre-heating station (PH) towards the pressing station (P), a substantial reduction of the vulcanising time in the press (P) is achieved, with a corresponding increase in production speed which especially, but not exclusively, becomes important if the items are conveyed on the conveyor belt (9) on a plate (16) for the moulding of the items' base during press vulcanising operations.<IMAGE>
