PURPOSE: To increase the braking effect of an engine brake by opening an exhaust valve for a short period of time at the time of start and end of a compression stroke in an engine brake condition. CONSTITUTION: In an internal combustion engine, air is suctioned through intake in the first and third strokes among four strokes, the air is compressed in the second and fourth strokes, and the air is fed toward a throttle valve provided in an exhaust pipe by opening the exhaust pipe partially in an engine brake condition to generate a braking force. In this case, the exhaust valve is briefly opened at both the beginning and the end of the compression stroke. That is, the exhaust valve is opened, starting from a bottom dead point until a crank angle reaches about 80 degrees at the beginning of the compression stroke and from the front of a crank angle of about 30 degrees at a top dead point to the rear of a crank angle of about 30 degrees at the top dead point at the end of the compression stroke, respectively. |
