Base or mattress support (12) for a bed (10). Side rails (20, 21) and associated side slat support members (22, 23) support a plurality of compression springs (26). End rails (13, 14) support a central slat support member (30) which runs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bed (10). A plurality of intermediate slat support members (31, 32, 33, 34) are positioned between the central slat support member 30 and the side rails 20, 21. The intermediate slat support members (31, 32, 33, 34) may be rotated about a vertical axis and moved longitudinally and transversely as required. The compression springs (26) are individually removable thereby to offer further support adjustment. Slats (40) are positioned on the support members and offer adjustable support force on a mattress (11) as well as motion of a side to side, up and down and rocking nature.
