<p>A plasma torch electrode (10) particularly useful for a transferred arc plasma furnace comprises an integral element (16) of carbon releasably mounted on the end of an electrically conductive, fluid cooled shaft (12). The shaft (12) has a passage (30) therethrough for the supply of ionising gas. The element (16) has passageways (32) therethrough for delivering the ionising gas to outlets (34) which form an annular array at the end portion (24) of the electrode from which the arc is discharged. The annular array of outlets (34) forms a tubular envelope of plasma which stabilizes the arc. A central passage (40) may also supply feed to the furnace.</p> |
