In order to produce starch which is homogenized to a high degree and is at least partly recrystallized, the starch melt is heated during processing at least to a temperature at which the helical structure of the starch molecules at least partly breaks up. To produce this homogenized, at least partly recrystallized starch, the starting material may be natural starch which must first be melted and homogenized by warming with water and/or other suitable aggregating agents before being heated to the temperature at which the helical structure of the starch molecules at least partly breaks up. Alternatively, a two-stage process may be used, in which granular starch, or other process forms, consisting substantially of homogenized, largely amorphous starch, is first produced. The granular material thus produced can be subsequently processed in the same way as conventional plastics granulates, the granules needing to be heated during processing at least to a temperature at which the helical structure of the starch molecules is to a great extent broken up. |
