<p>In a method of separating bacteria from a bacteria containing liquid sample, a dish-like centrifuge container (21) having an upper opening (25) defined by a radially inwardly extending rim portion (24) is employed. A volume of a gradient separation component of a density approximately identical to the average density of the bacteria is introduced into the centrifuge container, which the centrifuge container is rotating, so that a separation layer (60) is formed within the centrifuge container (21). The liquid sample is introduced into the centre of the centrifuge container at a fairly high discharge rate. The liquid is thrown outwardly from the centre of the centrifuge container and into contact with the separation layer (60) so that a liquid film layer (62) is generated. The bacteria are detained by the separation component, while the constituents of the liquid sample are discharged (66) from the centrifuge container.</p> |
