Multiple function encoder wheel for cartridges utilized in an electrophotographic output device

A cartridge (30) for an electrophotographic machine is disclosed having a sump (33) for carrying an agitator (34) rotatably mounted in the sump (33) for engagement with toner (35). An encoded device (31) is coupled to a first end of the agitator (34). A torque sensitive coupling is connected to a second end of the agitator (34) which is connectable to a drive mechanism of the machine. The encoded device (31) includes coding means representing cartridge characteristic information. The coding means may be a plurality of cam surfaces or a plurality of reflective surfaces. Alternatively, the coding means may be a plurality of openings in the encoded plate which are detected by the use of a magnetic field sensor and a magnet.
