This invention provides a red EL element comprising an SrS matrix which has a wide band gap and which can emit a light of an arbitrary wavelength, thus emitting a red light having a good color purity and a high luminosity. This element is composed of said SrS matrix functioning as the luminescent layer and contains europium and cerium, respectively in a concentration of 0.05 to 0.2 at.% and 0.2 to 5 at.%, as the impurities of a luminescent center.
