During the introduction of molten metal into a slab mould via a submerged pouring pipe, it has hitherto been attempted, by suitable measures (deflection of the main stream) and constructional design of the submerged pouring pipe, to achieve as laminar an outflow as possible of the molten metal from the submerged pouring pipe into the slab mould in order thereby largely to avoid turbulence in the molten metal and accumulation waves on the surface of the molten metal in the slab mould, which can have a detrimental effect on the finished product, the cast and solidified metal body of the slab. According to the invention, a substantial improvement in the laminar outflow of the molten metal from the submerged pouring pipe into the slab mould is achieved by the fact that the deflected transverse stream (I, II, III, IV) is deflected by part of the vertical main stream (X) into a direction (VII-VIII) transverse to the transverse stream. <IMAGE>
