A 5-phase stepping motor is operated in the microstep-constant-current mode with a half-bridge output stage, the phase current in at least two windings being set for one microstep such that, on the one hand, the phase currents are balanced with respect to the earth point while, on the other hand, a predetermined step-angle position is reached. The advantages of the simple half-bridge circuit are therefore linked to the advantageous capabilities of the microstep mode.
